Rookie Year 1974
In 1974, at age 18, he entered the Expert field with plate number 11G. He quickly piled up credits including International Racing at the end of the year. In road racing, he raced as a Junior with plate #211. He finished 2nd at Atlanta and 1st at Ontario road races. As a “Rookie” Expert on dirt, Randy finished 1st in short track points and finished 2nd in Expert regional points. He was the short track champion at Tri City Speedway, Granite City, Illinois. He was a frequent rider in the Wednesday night races at Santa Fe Speedway in Hinsdale, Illinois and won the 1974 Carroll Reswebber Classic TT. In Dec of that same year, he and K & N teammate Phil McDonald traveled to New Zealand where he finished 2nd in the Marlboro International Motor Race Series behind Pat Hennen.
